Problem:
How do I filter spam using server-side filters?
Solution:
Server-side filtering has many advantages over client-side filtering.
First off, setting up a filter on your mail server instead of the email
client on your local computer means that your mail is filtered all the
time, even when you are not checking your mail. Also, even if you use
another email client somewhere else (like WebMail, or a client at an
Internet cafe), your mail will still be filtered as you like it.
There are two methods available to you to enable server-side
filtering of spam... use the automated process at:
https://sysnews.ncsu.edu/tools-php/spam-filter-setup.php
or manually, as described below.
To enable server-side filtering of spam using the campus PureMessage
service:
1 Point your web browser to NCSU WebMail at: http://webmail.ncsu.edu
2 Log in using your Unity login ID and password
3 In the main message window, click on the "Server-Side Filters"
option on the top of the page
4 Click on the "Add a New Rule" button at the bottom of the page
5 Under "Condition", select the "Rule Type" of
"Header Match"
6 Select "X-Spam-Flag:" as the header, "contains" as the
comparison, and type "YES" in the field.
6a The condition should now read "The header X-Spam-Flag:
contains YES"
7 Under "Action", select the "Move message into" option
7a If you already have a folder for spam, choose that folder under
"The existing folder"
7b If you need to create a folder, select "a new folder, named" and
type "Spam" (or whatever you would like your junk mail folder to
be called.
8 Click on the checkbox next to the stop sign to stop further
filtering of spam messages.
9 Click on "Add New Rule"
Your new messages will now be filtered for spam. For more information
