Followup: The Help Desk phone system is back up. Unfortunately, voice mails left last night were lost in the recovery process. Clients who left voice mail for the NC State University Help Desk last night (Monday night) should contact the Help Desk again for assistance. We apologize for the inconvenience.

The University's Registration system, Pack Tracks (https://pactracks.ncsu.edu), is currently having problems. Users may not be able to login to the system at all. As soon as we have more information, we will post it. We apologize for any inconvenience.

post Campus Connectivity Issues

ComTech is currently investigating network outages within various buildings on campus. Users who are seeing connectivity problems should contact the NC State University Help Desk at 515-HELP(4357) and be prepared to provide their computer location (building and room) and physical MAC address (or be at their computer when they call, and Help Desk staff will assist them in getting their MAC address).

More information will be posted as it becomes available.

UPDATE: Issues have been resolved and the service appears to have returned to normal funtioning.

DELTA is currently having issues with the VISTA software service. Users may not be able to login to the service at this time. DELTA staff members are working on this problem and hope to have it resolved as soon as possible. As soon as we have more information, we will post it here.

post Help Desk open during move-in weekend

To assist incoming and returning students, the NC State Help Desk will be open for phone calls during move-in weekend, August 19-20, from 8am-5pm. Due to security concerns, walk-in clients will not be allowed in the building, but other university support staff will be available on campus to assist students returning to campus.

Students moving into campus residence halls this weekend (August 18-19) who have problems connecting to ResNet can sign up for an onsite visit from a ResNet technician. post Mulitple Services Out

A tripped breaker caused a row of servers to be knocked off-line. These include IMAP servers, Webmail servers, read-only servers, and a few others. We are working to bring all of these servers/services back on-line and have done so already for some, but it will take time to get them all back to full function.

Follow Up:
All services are back up and running save for LSF batch services. We are still working on those, but all other services are working at normal capacity.

post Network Problems in Residence Halls

We've received multiple calls this morning about network problems in the residence halls. The common symptom is the error "Limited or No Connectivity". This usually means that the machine is having problems connecting to the DHCP server to obtain an IP address. We have contacted our Network specialists and they are looking into the problem now. More information will be posted here and also at http://sysnews.ncsu.edu when available.

post NC State Help Desk merger

On Wednesday, January 16th, the new NC State Help Desk service will officially begin operations. This service combines the functions of the former Help Desks of ITD and ETSS into one unified group, answering questions from all NC State affiliates about MyPack Portal, Administrative Desktop concerns, password resets, Unity accounts, WebCT Vista support, and any other questions formerly posed to either the ETSS or ITD Help Desks.

Although all former methods of communication (phone numbers, email addresses, etc.) will continue to function until further notice, the direct contact information for the new NC State Help Desk will be:

Phishing Email - Faculty, Staff, and Students have been receiving an
email today from supports @ ncsu.edu with the subject to "WebNews / NCSU.EDU Web Email Account Update!!!" which is requesting them to update their account password. This is a phishing email.
Please disregard it. OIT is researching the issue and will provide additional information as it is made available.

post Attention Dreamweaver users: ftp.ncsu.edu now requries secure ftp

To improve security, ITD has disabled unencrypted authenticated ftp connections to ftp.ncsu.edu. Anyone wishing to connect to ftp.ncsu.edu will now need to use the sftp protocol. The Help Desk has received a large number of calls from folks using Dreamweaver who can no longer upload their files. In order to restore functionality, Dreamweaver users will need to follow the directions at:

post Daylight Savings Time computer issues

Under the U.S. Energy Policy Act of 2005, Daylight Savings Time (DST) is being extended by 4 weeks starting this year; it will start 3 weeks earlier and end one week later. post OIT calendaring decision

A memo (click on title above) has been sent to campus deans, directors, and department heads about a decision for unified calendaring services on campus.

As of right now, this announcement is just that: no definite plans for implementation have been made yet. More information on details about migrations, supported clients, and the eventual demise of the Oracle Calendar will be posted as it becomes available.
   
post Problems viewing PDFs in computer labs

If you have problems with Acrobat 7 or getting PDF files to appear, try running the "Acrobat 7 - Reset User Settings" application. It should appear in the "Help" folder and removes the Acrobat 7 settings files from the user profile. Some users have reported problems getting PDF files to appear within web browsers. This solution has been known to fix the problem.
   
post Changes in authentication for major administrative services

The credentials (passwords) used to authenticate customers to the Administrative Portal, the Financial System, and the new Human Resources (HR) System are being changed on March 26th, 2006. This change will strengthen the security of the Unity password and eliminate the need for customers to enter a separate IntraSecure password when accessing the Financial or HR systems. post MyPack Portal

Campus has recently moved many resources such as registration, tuition, employee payroll and paychecks, etc. top the MyPack Portal system.

While this system is very convenient, there are some quirks that users will need to remember. First and foremost, you can NOT log in to the Portal with your default Unity password. You will have to change it first -- the "Change Unity password" link on the Portal will take you to the right place.
